HOW THEY WORK
Heat pumps,
simply explained
An air source heat pump works a bit like a fridge in reverse. It draws warmth from the outside air, even on cold days, and uses it to heat your home and hot water.
Because it's moving existing heat rather than burning fuel to create it, a heat pump can deliver more energy than it uses. That efficiency is where the savings come from.
Runs efficiently even in cold weather
Heats your home and your hot water
No gas or oil to burn, and no fuel deliveries
Draws in outside air
The unit pulls in air from outside, which holds usable warmth even when it's cold.
Extracts the heat
A refrigerant absorbs that warmth and is compressed to raise its temperature.
Warms your home
That heat is passed to your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water.
Repeats, efficiently
The cycle continues, delivering more energy than it uses to run.
WHAT WE DO
Renewable heating, done properly
From your first bit of advice through to a fully installed system, we make the switch to renewable heating straightforward.
Air source heat pump installation

Boiler to heat pump upgrades
Switching from an old gas or oil boiler to a heat pump. We've done it for local homeowners and can make the transition seamless.
Honest advice first
A heat pump isn't right for every home. We'll give you a straight answer on whether it makes sense for your property before you commit.
Solar thermal
Solar thermal panels that use the sun's energy to help heat your hot water, cutting the cost of one of the biggest energy uses in the home.
Heat pump ready systems
Making sure your radiators, pipework and controls are set up to get the best from a heat pump, whether now or in the future.
Servicing and aftercare
Once your system's in, we're only a phone call away. We look after what we install, so it keeps running efficiently for years.
Boiler upgrade scheme
Grants that make the switch more affordable
The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a grant towards the cost of an air source heat pump for homes in England and Wales. It's a real help in bringing down the upfront cost, and the scheme currently runs until 2028.
If your home is off the gas grid and heated by oil or LPG, which is common across our rural patch, there's an increased grant available until 31 March 2027. We're happy to talk you through the scheme and what it could mean for your home.
The grant is claimed through an MCS-certified installer, who applies to Ofgem and takes the amount off your quote. We'll gladly explain how it works and point you in the right direction. You can start your application on the official government site below.
£7,500
towards an air source heat pump for most homes
£9,000
for eligible off-grid oil or LPG homes, until 31 Mar 2027
Plus 0% VAT on installation
Air source heat pump installations are currently zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is expected to return to 5%. A typical installation takes three to four months from enquiry to completion, so it's worth getting started in good time.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Heat pump and renewable questions, answered
How does an air source heat pump work?
It works a bit like a fridge in reverse. It draws warmth from the outside air, even when it's cold, and uses it to heat your home and hot water. Because it moves existing heat rather than burning fuel to create it, it can deliver more energy than it uses, which is where the savings come from.
Can you help me get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
We can explain how the scheme works and point you in the right direction. The grant itself is claimed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies to Ofgem on your behalf and takes the amount straight off your quote. DC Plumbing and Heating aren't currently MCS certified, so the application is handled by an MCS-certified installer rather than by us directly. Give us a call and we'll talk you through your options honestly.
Is a heat pump right for my home?
Not every home is suited to a heat pump, and we'll always give you a straight answer. During a free survey we look at your property, insulation, radiators and hot water needs to work out whether it makes sense for you. If it doesn't, we'll tell you.
Will a heat pump save me money?
Because heat pumps are highly efficient, customers who've switched are enjoying consistent heating with significantly reduced running costs. The exact saving depends on your home and what you're replacing, which we'll go through with you honestly.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
A typical installation takes three to four months from enquiry to completion, once surveys and any grant paperwork are sorted. Air source heat pump installations are currently zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is expected to return to 5%, so it's worth getting started in good time.
